God of all peoples, you are the true light illuminating everyone. You show us the way, the truth, and the life.
You love us even when we are disobedient. You sustain us with your Holy Spirit.
We rejoice in your life in the midst of our lives.
We praise you for your presence with us, and especially in this act of solemn covenant; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hello, I am Reverend REVERENDNAME.
We’re about to start the ceremony: as we wait for the wedding party to line up and come in, I’d like to invite you to join me in the mystical ritual of making sure the cell phone is quiet. [grin]

[bridal party enters]

Welcome! Thank you for coming to this celebration!

We are gathered together here in the presence of friends and family to celebrate the love which SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 have for each other; to give social recognition to their decision to commit their lives and accept each other completely; to learn how to help and understand other; and together, to travel through life and share their love of hockey.

So what’s hockey got to do with this? Well, hockey and marriage aren’t all that different!
Both require a lot of hard work, a lot of running, and a lot of learning and analyzing mistakes and starting over, every morning is a new day, a chance to make it better – as long as you are committed to make it better. A good game, and a good marriage — don’t just happen. It takes love to get started, and sheer determination to make it through. And in spite of all the knocking of heads, and checking, and clashing about goals, activities, kids, toys and other equipment, it is a wonderful experience with which we grow and in which we fulfill an important part of who we are and who we become.

Before we continue, if any of you has anything to say that might change their minds, they don’t want to hear it. However, they do want to hear from you that you are their village, that you will always be their friends, and that you will always support and encourage them as they build the skills and work up the commitment and dedication needed to make marriage work. You are here as fans, coaches and team members. I realize each of you comes from one side, so I would encourage you to embrace both of them and support them in their journey.

Hello and welcome!

We gathered together here in the family to celebrate the love which SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 have for each other, to give social recognition to their decision to commit their lives and accept each other completely, to learn how to help and understand each other, to build a family, and together, to travel through life.

Further, SPOUSE 2 and SPOUSE 1 want to thank each one of you for being here with them on this special day and they hope you will always be their village, and will always support and encourage them as they discover the commitment and dedication needed to make marriage work; so, this invitation is not just for one afternoon, it is an open invitation to be a part of their life.

Friends and family of the SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, welcome and thank you for being here on this important day.

We are gathered together to celebrate the very special love between SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, by joining them in marriage. All of us need and desire to love and be loved, and the highest form of love between two people is within a monogamous, committed relationship.

SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, your marriage today is the public and legal joining of your souls that have already been united as one in your hearts.
Marriage will allow you a new environment to share your lives together, standing together to face life and the world, hand-in-hand.
Marriage is going to expand you as individuals, define you as a couple, and deepen your love for one another.
To be successful, you will need strength, courage, patience and a really good sense of humor.
So, let your marriage be a time of waking each morning and falling in love with each other all over again.

Today there will be no dearly beloved, no betrothed, and no ancient rhyme of the married. Today there are no dead languages to solemnize vows that are very much alive and will remain so for a lifetime.
Today promises become permanent and friends become family.
However, this day is not about the words spoken or the rings exchanged, nor is it about grand pronouncements and recessional marches.
This day - the day of SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2’s wedding - is about love.
One of my favorite authors once wrote, "If love is not all, then it is nothing: this principle, and its opposite, collide down all the years of my breathless tale."
SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, your breathless tale is about to begin.
If love is not all, then it is nothing.
Its opposite - if love is all, then it is everything - is going to be the basis for every aspect of your relationship.
All you have to do is simply love one another and that love shows through in everything you do for one another, how you treat each other, in good times and bad.
Love isn’t just a word; it’s an action.
Love isn’t something you say, it’s something you do.
Love is genuine, honest, and open, compassionate and kind, passionate and blind, love doesn’t know space or time, nor look through jealous eyes.
Love never dies.
There are many different kinds of love, almost if not all of which are represented here today. There is romantic love, the love of parents and children, of brothers and sisters and family, and love among friends.
Not only do SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 love one another romantically - and they do, you can see it in every look, every touch, every moment they’re together - they also love one another as friends. In fact, they’re best friends, constantly giggling and taunting and teasing and very plainly and obviously having fun together. That love and enjoyment of each other as best friends will sustain them through this marriage. In addition, the love collectively in this room, from friends and family, will help sustain and support the promises they make today.
All of us here will help solidify this bond, as these two individuals are joined as husband and wife. This new journey will be at times richly rewarding and extremely difficult, but, most importantly, it will be a journey you take together.
Marriage is much more than your signatures on a legal contract. You are promising, in front of all these people you love, that you want to be with each other and only each other for the rest of your lives, and that you will do everything in your power to honor the promises you are making here today. For their part, the people who love you will also do everything in their power to try to help you hold up your end of the bargain.

Welcome family and friends.

Today we are here together to share a moment that will take two single hearts and join them as one...two souls that have found their mates.

Today a promise will be made between SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 that will set the path of happily ever after. You may be wondering if fairy-tales really do happen and if dreams really do come true; I am here to let you know, yes, they most certainly do! When two people look at one another and you see a sparkle in their eyes and a smile that seems to come from their heart you are seeing the dream they had is now becoming their reality. When you are in their presence, especially today, and you find yourself smiling and full of joy, you are sharing their happily ever after fairy-tale.

This journey, the journey of SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, is going to be exciting, fun...frustrating at times, filled with lots of laughter and sometimes tears...there is not one fairy-tale that didn’t have a few bumps along the way but, they are always happily ever after.

One of my favorite songs tells of the feeling of hearing the words, "I love you"... here are a few lines; "And this journey that we’re on, how far we’ve come and I celebrate every moment. When you say you love me, that’s all you have to say, I’ll always feel this way. When you say you love me, the world goes still so still inside and when you say you love me, in that moment, I know why I’m alive".

You (SPOUSE 2 & SPOUSE 1) started your journey together when you went on your first date. As your journey continues as husband and wife always remember that, in that moment when you hear the words "I Love You", you know why you’re alive.

Share your love in everything you do for one another. Always respect each other, treat each other with kindness...do things together but also find some alone time; include each other in big decisions but trust that your partner can also make good choices. Always be honest and speak easy if the truth might hurt. Hold hands and hug a lot. Laugh at as much as you can and give comfort when the tears may flow. Kiss goodnight and good morning...and say "I love you" often.

There is a great deal of love in the air today! How exciting is it that today you are making a promise that you want to spend the rest of your lives together! And your family and friends are not just here as guests; they are here to support and encourage you, to offer advice and words of wisdom - sometimes asked for and sometimes because they just know the right thing to say and the right time! Rest assured that those who love you will always be there for you!

Your journey will be long - go together. Your journey may be challenging at times - help one another. Your journey will be amazing - share it. Your journey together as one starts now - please joins hands.

We would like to welcome all of you, honored guests, and thank you for being with us today.

We are gathered here this evening, in the presence of God and of His company, to join SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 in Holy Union, and bear witness to the miraculous power of love.
Love is our purpose in being here; it is the essence of who we are.
With love as their foundation, marriage offers SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 the opportunity to become their essence with one another.
Marriage is an art form that brings profound joy and demands great responsibility, awareness, and commitment.
We who partake of this occasion bind ourselves as witnesses to the journey of love that they are undertaking here.

Good evening, welcome to this most important moment in the lives of this couple.

We invite you to leave behind the worries and concerns of everyday life and join us in the celebration of their marriage. This is an opportunity for us to share not only in the joy of SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2’s love but also to reaffirm and appreciate the love and the friendship we experience in our own lives. May we all celebrate by being fully present during our short time together.

SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 have chosen this setting in which to be married because it provides an appropriate backdrop for the public affirmation of their love. SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 view marriage as a coming together at all levels of being — mind, body, and spirit. A marital commitment includes the willingness to be open and vulnerable, and the courage to take risks.

Marriage is a conscious act of will. To remain in marriage we must continually renew our will to be married. Marital partners accept the challenges that living together in love offer. They decide that they will face the fears that are a necessary part of establishing and nurturing an intimate relationship. And you, SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 have made the commitment to create and recreate this conscious partnership.

Those of us who are married or in relationships may take this moment to consciously reaffirm our commitment to our partners and ourselves. Marriage consists of entrusting our deepest selves into the loving care of another. It is a public and legal act to be sure. It is also an emotional and spiritual act.

The spiritual aspect of marriage must be embraced openly, seriously, and completely for the marriage to endure. SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 commit themselves today to each other in sacred trust. They promise to embrace conflict as well as peace; to work as well as play; to struggle as well as coast; to give as well as receive; and to be with, stay with, and move toward one another.

Today is a celebration. A celebration of love, of commitment, of friendship, of family, and of two people who are in it for forever.

You don’t have to have a ceremony to have a marriage. And when you think about it, the whole thing is kind of weird, right? You’re standing on a stage, looking fancy, holding flowers, and being stared at by pretty much everyone who has meant anything to you in the past twenty-something years. So why do we do it? The marriage ceremony has been an important feature across nearly every culture, religion, generation, and society. We have thousands of important moments that happen throughout our lives, but this one is regarded as one so critical, we acknowledge its special status by sharing it with others. Why this moment?

Because despite all of our differences, love is what we all share. It’s the great unifier — our one universal truth. That no matter who we are, where we’ve come from, what we believe, we know this one thing: love is what we’re doing right. That’s why you both are standing here. That’s why you all are here to watch them stand up here. We have all loved in our lifetimes, and in this moment, we’re reminded that the ability to love is the very best part of our humanity.

All of us here today have our own love stories. Some are short, others long. Some are yet unwritten, while others are just getting to the good part. There are chapters in all of our stories that are sad or disappointing — and others that are exciting and full of adventure.

[Insert your own love story here]

And that brings them here. A time to pause, look back, and smile at all the moments that brought them here. And a time to look ahead at all the moments that are still to come.

I’m here — we’re all here — because we want those moments for you. We’re here to hope with you, to support you, to be proud of you, and to remind you that love isn’t happily ever after, love is the experience of writing your story. It’s not one moment — not even this moment. It’s every moment. Big ones like saying "I love you," moving in together, getting engaged — but mostly a million little ones that come in between the big moments. Falling asleep next to one another, making dinner together, spending holidays with your families, binge-watching Netflix shows, getting a big hug when you get home from work… These everyday moments fuse together into one big experience.

And even though this experience is so incredible, words fail us when we try and explain it. That’s just the way it is with love — it’s meant to be felt, not described.

love in different ways — and even though love can look different from one person to the next — we all know it when we see it. And we see it here.

So today, we have some words about what love is.

Love is a friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving.
It is loyalty through good and bad. It settles for less than perfection, and makes allowances for human weakness.
Love is content with the present.
It hopes for the future and it doesn’t brood over the past.
It’s the day-in and day-out chronicle of irritations, problems, compromises, small disappointments, big victories, and working toward common goals.
If you have love in your life, it can make up for a great many things you lack.
If you don’t have it, no matter what else there is, it is not enough, so search for it, ask God for it, and share it!

SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2, I know you’re eager to kiss and run away to live happily ever after… but before we’re done, I’d like to read to you about the art of marriage.

In marriage,
The little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
The courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
It should continue through all the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.

It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.

It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.

It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

Marriage is love walking hand-in-hand together.
It’s laughing with each other about silly little things, and learning to discuss big things with care and tenderness.
In marriage, love is trusting each other when you’re apart.
It’s getting over disappointments and hurts, which are also a part of relationships.
It’s the realization that there is no one else in this world that you’d rather be with than the one you’re married to.
It’s thinking of new things to do together; marriage is being in love for the rest of your life.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

Come join us in celebration, those who love sunshine on meadow
Who love shadow of the forest,
Love the wind among the branches and the palisades of pine trees,
And the thunder in the mountains whose innumerable echoes flap like eagles in their aeries.
Listen to this song of marriage. How, from another tribe and country came a young man,
"Give me as my wife this maiden, and our hands be clasped more closely, and our hearts be more united."
Thus it is, our daughters leave us, those we love and those who love us. When a youth with flaunting feathers beckons to the fairest maiden.
From the sky the sun benignant looked upon them through the branches,
Saying to them, "oh, my children life is checkered shade and sunshine."
The two figures man and woman standing hand-in-hand together, with their hands so clasped together that they seem in one united.
And the words thus represented are, "I see your heart within you. "
Sing them songs of love and longing
Now, let’s feast and be more joyous.

You are holding up a ceiling with both arms. It is very heavy, but you must hold it up, or else it will fall down on you. Your arms are tired, terribly tired, and, as the day goes on, it feels as if either your arms or the ceiling will soon collapse. But then, unexpectedly, something wonderful happens: someone, a man or a woman, walks into the room and holds their arms up to the ceiling beside you. So you finally get to take down your arms. You feel the relief of respite, the blood flowing back to your fingers and arms. And when your partner’s arms tire, you hold up your own to relieve him again. And it can go on like this for many years without the house falling.

Love, trust, and forgiveness are the foundations of marriage. In marriage, many days will bring happiness, while other days may be sad. But together, two hearts can overcome everything. In marriage, all of the moments won’t be exciting or romantic, and sometimes worries and anxiety will be overwhelming. But together, two hearts that accept will find comfort together. Recollections of past joys, pains, and shared feelings will be the glue that holds everything together during even the worst and most insecure moments. Reaching out to each other as a friend, and becoming the confidant and companion that the other one needs, is the true magic and beauty of any two people together. It’s inspiring in each other a dream or a feeling, and having faith in each other and not giving up… even when all the odds say to quit. It’s allowing each other to be vulnerable, to be himself or herself, even when the opinions or thoughts aren’t in total agreement or exactly what you’d like them to be. It’s getting involved and showing interest in each other, really listening and being available, the way any best friend should be. Exactly three things need to be remembered in a marriage if it is to be a mutual bond of sharing, caring, and loving throughout life: love, trust, and forgiveness.

I shall now read to you from the Bible, wise words about love, and what it takes to nurture a relationship; Let us begin with a passage from ’First Corinthians Chapter 13:’

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

×

You have arrived at this moment because of feelings, shared experiences, and shared interests. Now, you are ready to merge bank accounts and laundry.

When feelings are frazzled, and life gives you too little time together, what will hold you together? Will you recall that list of things about your beloved that gave you goosebumps and made you laugh? Will you recall those times your beloved encouraged you, cared for you while you were ill, and told you you could do the impossible?

Saint Paul gave a description of unconditional love:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.

True Christian marriage is always a merger, never a takeover. Life now becomes a joint venture, and two together are much stronger than two separate, even if following the same path.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God.
He that loves not, knows not God; for God is love.
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is perfected in us.

My beloved spoke, and said to me:
Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away.
For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of singing has come,
And the voice of the turtledove
Is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth her green figs,
And the vines with the tender grapes
Give a good smell.
Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away!

He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.

The greatest pursuit is not good health, unsurpassed wisdom, economic surplus, political freedom, or even faith that can move mountains. It is the daily practice of the greatest of the non-negotiable laws of wellness, the Law of Unconditional Loving. Unconditional, nonjudgmental loving. This is our aim, life’s single highest and most rewarding pursuit — the highest expression of Divine Design is applied love found in loving relationships between people. Not the erotic love we see on television and in the movies but love rooted in a decision to serve. It is a dynamic state of consciousness, a giving, creative flow, and a harmony. It’s an acceptance of the human condition as perfectly imperfect. And it is a choice to love without regard to any conditions; no ’ifs’ are allowed in this, the greatest of laws.

People are like cities: we all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.

A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we’re safe in our own paradise. Our soulmate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we’re two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we’ve found the right person. Our soulmate is the one who makes life come to life.

Each one of them will pour their own sand in a common vase — the symbolism being that each one bring their life, experience, feelings and uniqueness into this marriage, the family they start here before you. The united sands represent the love which they have for each other, the family they will build together, and, hopefully, the new life they will nurture together.

SPOUSE 1 and SPOUSE 2 will now light a unity candle.

The two outside candles have been lighted to represent both your lives in this moment. They are two distinct lights, each capable of going their separate ways.
As you join now in marriage, there is a merging of these two lights into one light.
From now on your thoughts shall be for each other rather than your individual selves.
Your plans shall be mutual, your joys and sorrows shall be shared alike.
As you each take a candle and together light the center one, you start a new family, with a unity of hopes, dreams and families.

Maid of Honor pours wine into the cup, gives cup to the bride. Bride sips from the cup. Bride gives cup back to Maid of Honor. Maid of Honor gives cup to Best Man. Repeat. SPOUSE 1 extend your left arm and SPOUSE 2 please extend your right arm —
[Minister takes the joined hands, and the rope]

Here before witnesses, and have sworn vows to each other. With this cord, I bind them to the vows that they each have made.
[Wrap the cord loosely around both arms]

However this binding is not tied, so that neither is restricted by the other, and the binding is only enforced by both their wills.

Please repeat after me:
"Heart to thee,
Soul to thee,
Body to thee,
Forever and always,
So mote it be."

So mote it be.
[Unbinds their arms.]

May we have the rings please?

You've both chosen to wear rings as a reminder of these promises. People often say wedding bands are a perfect circle, with no beginning and no end. But these rings did have a beginning. The stones were formed a long time ago deep within the earth. Eventually, a series of lucky events caused them to rise to the surface, where someone dug them up. Metal was then liquefied in a furnace at a thousand degrees — molded, cooled, and painstakingly polished. Something beautiful was made from raw elements.

SPOUSE 2, as you place the ring on SPOUSE 1's finger, please look at her and repeat after me:

I give you this ring as a visible and constant symbol of my promise to be with you as long as I live.

SPOUSE 1, as you place the ring on SPOUSE 2's hand, please look at him and repeat after me:

I give you this ring as a visible and constant symbol of my promise to be with you as long as I live.

Love is like that. It comes from humble beginnings, and through a combination of serendipity and effort, imperfect beings shape it into something extraordinary. It's the process of making something beautiful where there was once nothing at all. As you look at these rings over the years, I hope you remember that. You've created something invaluable, and just as I know you’ll protect these rings, I'm confident you'll protect the commitments you've made to one another today.

My marriage prayer for you is this:

That you will always remember the qualities that attracted you to each other when you first met and how you felt as your feelings of attraction turned into respect, admiration and finally love.

That you will work hard to turn your feelings of love into acts of love so that nothing and no one can divide you.

That you will always have kind and loving hearts that are quick to ask forgiveness when you are wrong as well as to forgive when your partner is wrong.

That your love might grow to hear all things, believe all things, hope for all things, and endure all things.

I pray you place your marriage in God's hands, and that your love increases and overflows, beyond anything you can yet imagine.

Imagination, to keep with you part of the child you used to be.
Mirth, from your sense of humor.
